Heartwood

Project Type: New Build
Location: Portland, OR

Originally stalled in the early stages, the Heartwood project was revitalized when JRA stepped in to finalize the design development. Our team refined the finishes and specifications while establishing a robust sustainability agenda and a voluntary tree protection plan. Through thoughtful design adjustments, including a complete window specification overhaul that upgraded the home to triple glazing while reducing overall costs, the project quickly gained momentum.

Drawing from JRA’s extensive palette of sustainable materials, the team shaped a home that balances comfort and style. Signature details include custom board-formed concrete exterior finishes, wood stoves, polished concrete floors, Zena’s white oak, lime plaster ceilings, and tadelakt walls. The home is wrapped in exterior mineral wool insulation and supported by two HRVs and a hydronic heating and cooling system, delivering performance, durability, and refined living.

The brilliant balance of wood and stone and closeness to the water gives this project a specific type of spirit, embodied by the name of Heartwood.”
